(01540 673675, www.eagleviewguesthouse.co.uk) Set back from a busy road, Eagle View feels secluded. Newtonmore, Creag Dhubh and the River Spey are on the doorstep. This is a walker's paradise. 4/5
Comfort and staff
Stylish yet cosy double rooms come with Egyptian cotton bedding and a LCD flat screen telly. It's a warm and homely atmosphere, created by it's gregarious owners. 5/5
Food
A scrumptious breakfast with traditional cooked and continental options, but try the speciality of scrambled eggs with fresh spinach. The communal table lends itself to conversation. for dinners, the nearby Glen Hotel serves pub grub and the Cross has three AA rosettes. 4/5
Things to do
Newtonmore is in the heartland of Britain's largest national park. in winter, activities such as skiing and dog sledding take off from just up the road. The seven-mile Wild Cat Trail, which can be walked in shorter sections if you like, begins in the village. The free Clan Macpherson Museum, just over the road and opened by appointment in winter, gives you a grip on local history. 4/5

Reader's Guide to The Highlands

Good base for walking in the Cairngorms — small and very friendly, but with lovely rooms (one with a Victorian bath) and great breakfast.

(tel 673675; www.eagleviewguesthouse.co.uk; Perth Rd; room per person £23-30) The family-friendly Eagleview is one of the nicest places to stay in the area, with beautifully decorated bedrooms, spacious bathrooms with power showers, and nice little touches like wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, cafetieres with real coffee on your hospitality tray, and real milk rather than yucky UHT stuff.
