This
page of our site gives you a very brief look at things that there
are to see & to do during your stay with us in this delightful
part of the world. At the bottom of each paragraph we've listed
some useful links for you to find out even more.
Newtonmore
Badenoch & Strathspey Pipe Band
Wildcat Trail
Further details for our Wildcat Trail can be obtained here. Also, the Wildcat Information Centre in the village has some very useful tour information . . . not to be missed!
Walking, Climbing & Mountaineering
Nearby are 3 magnificent mountain ranges — the Cairngorms, the
Monadliaths & Nevis range. You are spoilt for choice with an
excellent selection of Munros, Corbetts & Donalds, all achievable
in a comfortable day's outing from here. There is also a whole host
of very fine, lower level walks, forest trails and short walks (notably
the 7-mile Wildcat Trail around Newtonmore itself, see above for more details).
The Badenoch Way runs nearby, the spectacular Corrieyairack Pass
is just a short drive away and the more challenging Speyside Way
starts (or finishes if you prefer) just 20 minutes up the road in
Aviemore. Should I mention the Lairig Ghru? Arguably one of Britains toughest "walks". A formidable mountain pass; 28 miles of rugged terrain rising to 2,700 feet linking Speyside and Deeside . . . not for the faint-hearted and, no, I haven't done it! Though we have done the very lovely and easy 5-mile, or so, forest walk to the start of the pass.
For walks where transport is required we are happy to drop off or pick up. We also have available a full range of OS maps and guidance of the Cairngorms area. Clothes washing/drying facilities are available for the vagaries of the Scottish weather.
We are members of Walking World and will happily print out walks for our guests. These are comprehensive guides to walks for all levels of competency with pictures, descriptions and map references.

A dear friend of ours, Steven Fallon, has a breathtaking passion for the outdoors and, in particular, Scotland. His website is a valuable resource for those who wish to tackle the Scottish peaks.
Cycling
There are cycle routes too numerous to mention in the local area
in and around the Glen Truim, Etteridge & Phones Estates.
Also, now open, is the exciting new Mountain Biking Centre - Wolf
Trax at Laggan. This fabulous new operation has over 6 kms of really
challenging Black routes, the same length of testing trails for
intermediates and 1.5 kms of fun for beginners. They offer great
base facilities too and all this is just just 15 minutes away!!
The 215 mile cycle route from Glasgow to Inverness passes the end
of our drive, why not stop over for a night "or even 2"
for a well earned rest?
With more practical considerations in mind, we have ample secure
storage for bikes and can arrange for hire & repairs through
Service Sports in Kingussie.
Watersports
Watersports abound close at hand with Loch Insh Watersports just
20 minutes away, offering equipment hire and tuition for sailing,
canoeing & windsurfing, together with kayak safaris onthe River
Spey. Loch Morlich is a little further, offering similar facilities,
again in stunning surroundings.
Fishing
Some of Scotland's renowned fishing, for Salmon, Trout & Pike
is available locally onthe River Spey, at the Rothiemurchus Fishery
and on various Lochs nearby.
Golf
The two closest courses are at Newtonmore and at Kingussie - 2
very different courses, each very enjoyable and amply rewarding
in its own way. There are also a number of other courses within
a short drive of Eagle View - plenty to go at during your stay if,
of course, Golf is yourthing.
Horse Riding
Riding is available from Sarah and David at
Newtonmore Riding & Equestrian Centre, also Alvie Stables and Rothiemurchus
Estate, there are different rides to suit all standards.
Wildlife
We are surrounded by thousands of acres of moorland and forest,
teeming with wild creatures. The RSPB owns the nearby Insh Marshes
Nature Reserve and just 30 minutes up the road, the Loch Garten Nature
Reserve, home of the world famous Ospreys.
Just 15 minutes away, the superb, award-winning Highland Wildlife
Park, with its wolves & bison to name but 2 of its residents,
is well worth a visit.
You can also get "up close & personal" withthe Cairngorm
Reindeer Herd near Aviemore and, if you wish, book a sled-dog ride
through the forests. Both are great fun!!
Turning to our feathered friends, we have been really surprised
at the wide range of birds that you can see in the countryside around
here. Greenfinches, Siskens, Chaffinches, Blue Tits & Thrushes,
Lapwings, Partridges, Pheasants & Oyster Catchers all put in
regular appearances in the fields and trees around the village.
Further afield but still within easy reach, sightings of Golden
Eagles, Ospreys, Buzzards, Capercaillie, Black Grouse & Snow
Bunting await you.
Skiing and Snowboarding
One of the reasons we moved here is that our location offer skiers
& boarders like me a choice of venues, doubling our opportunities
to get on to the snow and offering us different challenges, runs
& routes.
Just over half an hour away, the Cairngorms are Scotland's premier
ski area, with Downhill, Snowboarding, Telemark and Nordic all well
catered for. A little further way, 45 minutes or so, is the smaller,
more intimate Nevis Range for a change of scenery.
Photography
Are you a serious photographer or someone who, like Moira, just
likes to take nice photos?
Whether you are interested in photographing landscapes, buildings,
wildlife, birdlife, plants or simply in capturing wonderful holiday
images this area offers you loads of opportunities to take some
marvellous photos.
Other Activities
Also in the area you can try your hand at Clay Pigeon Shooting,
Archery, Gliding, 4x4 Off Road driving and Quad Bike riding all of which we can
arrange for you. |
